Obscurata. . .Tirzah
from the Director’s Desk
“The
five daughters of Zelophehad were Mahla, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.”
Num 26:33
This
name, Tirzah and her five sisters, recently appeared in a WELCA Litany.
Who were these sisters and why were they so significant.
“For the bold wisdom of Tirzah and her sisters,
who
used their gifts to stand together and make a request that would change an
injustice
on
behalf of their community.”
Valora K Starr
Zelophehad was a descendant of Manasseh and died in the wilderness without
a male heir. Of the tribes who rebelled against Moses under Korah’s
leadership, none received an inheritance. Zelophehad’s tribe was about to
lose their right to landed property without a male heir. The daughters
went before Moses and Eleazar and Tirzah plead their case. “Give us a
possession among the brethren of our father.”
Moses took the matter to the Lord and
in Numbers 27:7 the Lord hands down a judgment: “the daughters of
Zelophehad are right; you shall give them possession of an inheritance
among their father’s brethren and cause the inheritance of their father to
pass to them.”
Later, in
Chapter 36:6-12 RSV this law is further refined. Moses commanded them,
according to the word of the Lord, to marry within the tribe of their
father so that the inheritance would not be removed from the father’s
family. So Tirzah, by speaking up, possibly urged on by others, created a
niche for women, a place where the father’s inheritance did not completely
disappear because their was no eldest son. For this we thank and shall
remember this obscure OT personality.
